How Does Electrolysis Work?

Electrolysis treats each hair individually using a very fine, sterile, single-use probe.

The probe is gently inserted into the natural opening of the hair follicle — nothing is punctured or forced. A small electrical current is then applied to destroy the part of the follicle responsible for hair growth. The hair is removed with tweezers and should slide out easily, without pulling.

Hair grows in cycles, which means not all hairs are visible at the same time. This is why treatment happens over a period of time. When electrolysis is carried out correctly and consistently, the treated hairs do not return.

What does it feel like?
Most people describe a brief warm or tingling sensation. Settings are always adjusted to keep you comfortable, and treatment is paced to suit you.

Electrolysis vs Laser

Laser can reduce hair growth for some people, but it does not permanently remove hair. It relies on pigment, which means results vary depending on hair colour and skin tone, and maintenance treatments are usually needed.

Electrolysis takes longer because each follicle is treated individually. However, this is what makes it permanent. Smaller areas, particularly on the face, are often more affordable than people expect, and progress is monitored throughout treatment.

Once a follicle has been treated successfully, it’s finished — the hair does not come back.

The Equipment we Use

We use the Apilus electrolysis machine because it allows treatments to be carried out accurately and comfortably. It gives greater control than older machines and allows settings to be adjusted to suit your skin and hair.

All treatments use sterile, single-use disposable probes. Cleanliness and hygiene are a standard part of every appointment, not an afterthought.

Amber and I are fully licensed electrolysis practitioners, holding VTCT Level 3 qualifications in electrolysis. I also hold a VTCT Level 5 qualification in advanced electrolysis skin blemish removal.

We are members of BABTAC, which requires practitioners to hold recognised qualifications, appropriate insurance, and to work to established professional standards.

I am also trained through the MASCED programme to recognise possible signs of melanoma and skin cancer, so anything of concern can be flagged appropriately.
